General Knowledge Answers:
Q1. What is this sign? a) Clearway b) No waiting c) no overtaking.
A1. Correct answer is A: You must not stop in a clearway zone unless in an emergency, clearway zones usually have solid white lines on the left side of the carriageway.

Q2. When can you use your hazard lights? a) Whilst braking on a motorway b) Whilst parked on the brow of a hill c) Whilst being towed.
A2. Correct answer is A: You can only use your hazard lights if you are temporarily blocking traffic, warning of a hazard or obstruction ahead on a motorway, or on an unrestricted dual carriageway. Hazard lights must not be use whilst parked, drivers can rarely see both indicators and therefore you appear to be signalling to pull out onto the carriageway.

Q3. What is the difference between a pelican crossing and a puffin crossing?
a) Cyclists can ride across. b) There is no flashing light on a puffin. c) There is no yellow ‘wait’ box for pedestrians to press. d) all of these.
A3. Correct answer is B: A Puffin crossing has sensors, when pedestrians clear the crossing the lights will return to green. A pelican crossing is a timed crossing, a flashing amber light indicates the motorist may commence only if the crossing is clear.

Q4. On double yellow lines which of these is true?
a) No stopping unless in an emergency. b) Only stop if dropping off or picking up passengers or heavy loads. c) Only delivery vehicles and professional drivers, i.e. taxis, ice cream vans etc...may stop.
A4. Correct answer is B: b) Only stop if dropping off or picking up passengers, or loading or unloading heavy loads. Disabled drivers are also permitted to park on double yellow lines, therefore someone parked may not be breaking any laws.

Q5. What is the maximum speed limit on a dual carriageway for a car?
a) 60 mph. b) 70mph. c) 50mph.
A5. Correct answer is B: On dual carriageways the speed limit, unless otherwise stated, is the same as motorways 70mph.

Q16. If you are parking uphill overnight you should:
a) Select reverse gear and turn your steering wheel towards the left kerb. b) put into forward gear and turn wheel towards the left kerb. c) Select forward gear and turn the wheel right, away from left kerb.
A6. Correct answer is C: Select forward gear and turn the wheel right, away from left kerb. If the handbrake should fail your car will not roll back far (because of the gear selected). It will not pick up speed as the front nearside wheel will hit the kerb and the car will not be protruding into the road.

Q7. Mirrors should be checked when?
a) Approaching a bend. b) Approaching a hazard. c) Raising or lowering speed. d) All of these.
A7. Correct answer is D: You should check your mirrors every time you change speed (faster or slower), change direction, on approaching a bend or any kind of junction. When approaching developing hazards e.g. - a pedestrian crossing or roundabout, approaching an unleashed dog, cyclists, hills etc...
If you think, as an experienced driver, you check your mirrors enough, double the number of times you check them and you may be getting close to an acceptable level.

Q8. What colour are the reflective studs on the left side of the left lane of a motorway?
a) Red. b) Amber. c) White.
A8. Correct answer is A: Red studs mark the left hand lane of motorways, white studs mark the centre/middle lane and amber studs mark the central reservation. Green studs appear on the left when exiting motorways.

Q9. Whilst waiting at a set of traffic lights the lead car should.
a) Apply handbrake and neutral gear. b) Apply the handbrake and select appropriate gear. c) Use footbrake and neutral gear.
A9. Correct answer is B: Prepare to move away by having the car in the appropriate gear and the handbrake on. The handbrake will prevent the car moving forward, protecting against a shunt accident. Do not use the footbrake, your foot could slip, and over use of the footbrake can cause excessive wear of the brake lights. Do not hold the car on the clutch for prolonged periods, this will gradually wear out your clutch.

Q10. You slowly approach these lights, intending to turn right with no cyclists waiting and just as you pass the first solid line the lights change what should you do now?
a) Carry on and complete your turn. b) Go past the white lines and wait without blocking the crossing. c) Wait at the 2nd white line (nearest the lights).
A10. Correct answer is C: You should not go beyond the lines if the lights are red and you can stop the car safely.  Ideally stop before the first line (remember amber means prepare to stop), if you have gone beyond this, and the lights change, then you must wait behind the next line in front of the lights.
